Italy welcomes a new top-tier appellation: Cirò Classico DOCG!
After three years of anticipation, the European Union has officially approved the creation of Cirò Classico DOCG – Italy's 78th DOCG and the first in the Calabria region! What does this mean? Cirò Classico DOCG is a premium, aged version of Cirò DOC red wines, sourced from the appellation's oldest and most prestigious vineyards.
Key features of the new appellation:
• Red Wine Only: Cirò Classico DOCG is exclusively for dry red wines.
• The wine must consist of at least 90% Gaglioppo, with up to 10% Magliocco and/or Greco Nero permitted.
• Vineyards must be located in the municipalities of Cirò and Cirò Marina, on the coastal hills overlooking the Ionian Sea.
• The wine is aged for a minimum of 36 months, including at least 6 months in oak barrels.
• Minimum alcohol content – 13%.
• Wines must exhibit a ruby-red color and an intense aroma with notes of red fruits.
