Sparkling Revolution: in the Rhône Valley News from Wine Paris

The Rhône region is launching a new "collective brand" for sparkling wines.

At the recent Wine Paris exhibition, a major milestone for French winemaking was announced: the Rhône region is launching a new "collective brand" for sparkling wines. Philippe Pellaton, head of the InterRhône professional committee, confirmed the winemakers' ambition to elevate their sparkling wines to the same level of prestige and recognition currently held by the Côtes du Rhône status.

Key highlights to know:

- Technology: For now, it remains a mystery. Discussions are centered on both the classic "Champagne method" and the Méthode Provençale, which is characteristic of Southern France (where secondary fermentation is triggered by grape must rather than liqueur de tirage).

- The Goal: To create a powerful regional brand that will set a new quality standard for sparkling wines from the Rhône.

- Timeline: Despite the enthusiasm, the journey toward official AOP status could take several decades due to the complexities of the French bureaucratic system.

Nevertheless, the map of French sparkling wines continues to expand. The Rhône Valley is officially entering the sparkling market — an event we certainly won't miss!
