On the second Saturday of October, the world celebrates Pinotage, a unique South African grape! Let's learn a little more about it.
Pinotage was born in 1925 thanks to Professor Abraham Izak Perold, who crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsault (then known as Hermitage).
Pinotage can produce wines with rich aromas of dark fruit and smoked bacon, and the best examples demonstrate exceptional depth and complexity!
It's a versatile grape, used to make both light-bodied rosés and rich, age-worthy red wines. Pinotage is grown almost exclusively in South Africa, making it a true national treasure.
What to pair with Pinotage? Pinotage pairs perfectly with:
• Grilled meats: especially juicy steaks and burgers.
• Spicy dishes: such as African curries or dishes with smoked paprika.
• Game: venison, wild boar, and other game will highlight the earthy notes of the wine.
• Hard cheeses: aged cheddar or gouda are an excellent complement.
