On March 20, 2025, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food announced the approval of a new Origen Protegida (PDO) for the wine - Vino de Pago Rio Negro, located in the municipalities of Cogolludo, San Andrés and Membrillera within the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha.
The climate in this continental region is Mediterranean, with wind speeds of 560 millimetres per year and daily temperature variations of over 20°C. Low humidity and strong winds favour the health and quality of the grapes. The increased solar radiation due to the altitude causes the skins to thicken, allowing for greater aroma visibility.
The vineyards in the area are planted at altitudes between 940 and 1000 meters above sea level on the steeply rising Rio Negro plateau. The following requirements for the varieties and types of wines have been approved:
White wine: grape variety - 100% Gewurztraminer. Minimum alcohol content - 12%. At least 50% of the grapes must undergo pre-fermentation contact with the skins. Aging on lees in steel or oak for at least 3 months is prescribed, and then at least 1 month in a bottle.
Red wine: grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo. Minimum alcohol content - 13%. All grapes must undergo pre-fermentation cold maceration from 3 to 21 days. Minimum aging is 11 months, of which at least 5 months the wine must spend in oak tanks, followed by aging in bottles for at least 6 months.
