Only fortified wine produced in the Douro region of Portugal and having physicochemical, organoleptic and quality characteristics defined by the Institute of Douro and Porto Wines (Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, IVDP) is considered port wine.
The word "port" comes from the name of one of the main ports of Portugal - Porto. Fortified wines made from grapes growing in the Douro River Valley were exported through this port.Port wine has the category of “designation of controlled origin” — Região Demarcada do Douro, enshrined in Portuguese and European Union legislation. To guarantee and confirm authenticity, a special stamp developed by IVDP is affixed to the neck of each bottle of port, under the heat-shrinkable cap.
The Institute’s experts recommend considering the following points when buying port wine:
- Check if it contains the designation of origin Porto (or its translation);
- Check the guarantee seal issued by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (which contains security elements);
- Check if the label states “Product of Portugal” or if there is a translation of this word.
