Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre: the classic formula for Southern Rhône blends. The term has become widely used and popularized in Australia.
The Roles in the Blend:
• Grenache: Fruitiness, warmth, alcohol, soft texture.
• Syrah: Color, tannin, aromas of flowers/meat.
• Mourvèdre: Structure, dark berries, spicy/earthy notes, aging potential.
The proportions are variable, from Grenache-dominant (e.g., 60–80% Grenache, 10–25% Syrah, 5–15% Mourvèdre) to more "balanced" or Syrah-leading, depending on the appellation and style.
