New Chilean Appellations

Three new regional appellations covering all wine-making territory of Chile, obviously will be not used. Already the 29th of September Chilean authorities agreed three new regional appellations for the wine-making territory of the country - Costa, Andes and Entre-Cordilleras. New denominations should have demonstrated “fantastic diversity of qualified wines and regions of production”. Costa, Andes and Entre-Cordilleras cover the whole territory from Malleco in the South till Rio Elqui in the North. It is not necessary to show the name of the appellations, this information is facilitative. Appelation Costa includes Western production areas – Limari, Casablanca, San-Antonio, Colchagua, Itata; Andes – Eastern areas Elqui, Choapa, Maipo, Cachapol, Curico, Maule; Entre Cordilleras – the central part producing about 60% of Chilean wine. Introduction of new appellations was seen positively but expert have some doubts in a practical value of this innovation, remarks Decanter.com. Customers can't remember all the appellations of the world – said Aurelio Montes from Montes Wines, - in Chile they know Colchagua, Apalta, Casablanca and that is all. Entre-Cordilleras is a complicated name, it includes a well known name of Apalta, and I will not mark Entre-Cordilleras at place of Apalta”.Some representatives of Wines of Chile agree with Mr. Montes. Michel Cox, Director of British Department of WoC gave following comments: “the name Entre-Cordilleras doesn't give full information, for example, for Carmenere one of the most important lands is Peumo in Cachapoal, sure people will use Peumo and not Entre-Cordilleras”.
